Hello John. Thank you so much for that beautiful tribute to Kevin. True friends for sure. So many happy times and memories you have to remember Kevin by.
For all of us too, when we all got together raising our families, camping, you two hunting, backpacking and all.
I remember Kevin buying the food for the backpacking trips with you, putting together the planned menus and food for the hikes into the wilderness. He had to be really organized. But he loved every minute of it. I remember one time I joined you all on the adventure. It was beautiful to be there.
Let’s be sure to get together once this pandemic passes.
Love ❤️ to you, Penny and the family.
Dede

I met Kevin in February of 1972. I was looking for an apartment as I had just been hired to work on One South at El Camino Hospital, the secure psychiatric clinic. I had a beard and long hair and it was clear to me that most apartment complexes were not eager to have this “hippie” move in, “You’ll have to wear a bathing cap in the pool!”
Then I looked at The Corners and this really friendly guy, the manager for the complex showed me around and clearly wasn’t put off by me. I remember thinking, “He and I could be friends.” And we were for almost 50 years.” We backpacked, hunted, fished and ate together over all those years. He married Dede not long after my own marriage to Penny. They were the first to show up at Kaiser after our daughter was born. I’m a psychologist and for 25 years I took patients into the woods for a combined therapy-backpacking experience. For all those years Kevin was the cook. “uncle Kevin.” We camped in a remote spot so I could have privacy. Over the years Kevin dragged rocks and logs down from the hill and made us a beautiful campfire area with seating for everyone. And he was a great cook as well as a tremendous source of humor and friendliness to everyone. One year he called me. I had some participants coming from Southern California and two of them had been calling him to tell him about their dietary restrictions. He was in disbelief. “This is a backpacking trip!” He was always scouring the goodwill shop for bargains on cooking equipment. Over the years he had a vast store of that equipment buried in two large garbage cans, still there. One year he showed me an aluminum ankle support he had bought for one dollar. “What is that for?” “In case someone sprains an ankle.” It was propitious. He broke his ankle on that workshop. While I was working with my group he went off exploring as he often did and jumped off a rock wrong. When we came back into camp he was lying on his backpack with his leg up and was whittling a crutch. You can’t make this up. He said he had sprained his ankle. There were three physicians on that trip and one trauma nurse. The three physicians concurred with Kevin’s diagnosis. The nurse said to me, “It’s broken.” Always listen to the nurse! The next morning someone young ran out to the cars and fetched the brace. We divided up his stuff and he hobbled out of the woods. Amazing. Another time my son and I met Kevin at his bird club to hunt. He said, “I’ll watch from the road. I’m not walking the fields today.” “Why not?” “I broke my leg two days ago and they put in a pin so it doesn’t hurt!” What! That was Kevin. He may have had the highest pain threshold of anyone I’ve known.
I have way too many memories for this space. He was one of the best friends of my life. We laughed a lot and we had wonderful meals with Dede at his home and ours. I have a picture right in front of me on my bookshelf of the two of us by that campsite. It was my last wilderness workshop as I called them. I remember saying to him to remind me that this was the last time I was ever doing this workshop. I was done after 25 years. It’s a great shot of the two of us kneeling with arms akimbo over each other’s shoulders. I think that is how I will always remember him, my friend.
