Thank you for your memories, Todd. Even after these months have passed, we still miss him. I always enjoyed overhearing George's conversations with co-workers, other regulators and RPs. He truly enjoyed the work, he believed in the program goals and cared about the people under his regulatory wing. He was sad when you left for DWR, but happy for you.

So sorry for the loss. I worked with George in the Division of Water Quality at the State Water Resources Control Board. I remember George as a hard working, intelligent, and compassionate engineer. Before we worked together, George and I would "lock horns" mostly to a standstill on the technical issues. At that time, he was at the Regional Office and I was at the State Water Resources Control Board. I still smile when thinking of those interactions. I will always remember him as a greatly skilled professional and a gentleman. Sorry to hear of his passing so late. condolences to the family and friends of this great person.

Richard, thank you for sharing your memories of working with George at the State and Regional Water Board. Although he enjoyed all aspects of his work, he was most happy when he could help small dischargers and RPs resolve their problems. He would appreciate your appreciation of his amazing sense of humor, and especially recognition of his integrity.

George was a good friend to me early in my career way back when Gearhart existed. I was a green geologist and George was an extremely patient petrophysicist. We stayed friends till the end and now we will for eternity. He had the biggest heart I've ever known and his passing hurts me greatly. I cannot imagine the pain his family is going through, but I will say prayers that we can all take comfort in knowing George is waiting for us with that grin on his face. See you again someday Georgie!

Tim, thank you for sharing! I teared up and laughed reading your stories, they very typical Dad to me!! He passed on his love for food to his kids, and me especially, I love food! And oddly he always had cantaloupe in the fridge in the summer, and it has become a comfort food for me! He was a very determined and hard worker, and he always pushed us to be the same way :) You are right he never lost his personality and who he was, I miss him very much. Thank you again

My condolences to George's loved ones. I worked with George at the Regional and State Boards for many years and consider George a dear friend. I first met George as we worked in the same program at the Regional Board. We became friends sharing a similar sense of humor, and George, Kyle and I could laugh together with running jokes for hours if not days or weeks. I can still see George's smile and hear his laugh. Our humor was a relief for sometimes stressful and complex engineering projects. The humor facilitated a good and productive work environment as we could consult with each other on serious professional matters. I respected George's engineering abilities and witnessed him solve complicated engineering problems that had vexed other staff for years. I also, over the years, had the opportunity to witness George's unquestionable integrity. I could always rely on his honesty and his forthright opinion. There were times that we would disagree, but with respect and without ever questioning each others motivation. After we both moved to the State Board, I would occasionally stop by George's office to talk office politics, engineering and to catch up on life. After I retired I did have the opportunity to talk with George occasionally which was as if we still sat in adjoining cubicles. There are not many people that I respect as much as George, he was a rarity. George was a true friend, a sometimes amazing engineer, and a great person - he will be truly missed. I am sorry for the families loss, which so many of us share!

To George's loved ones I am so sorry for your loss. George often spoke about his love for you all and he was so very proud of his children. He was so excited and happy to have Nadine in his life and that truly touched my heart. George was the kindest and most caring person that I knew. He was such a wonderful blessing and taught me how to be a more patient and understanding person. He always tried to stay upbeat even in the face of his cancer and the limitations it posed for him. This is one man that we all can truly look up to. Rest in peace my special friend. Much Love, Jacque

As the Water Board's LOP chief George was always great to work with. He was upbeat and funny in spite of his challenges, and brought a sensible approach to regulation. When dealing with the various LOP agencies he was the "cat-herder" in chief and made things work. I'm sorry for your loss - I miss him.

I met George when he took a job at the Central Valley Water Board. He added a lot to the office because he knew his stuff, he worked hard, and he liked to have fun. We had a pretty big office and occasionally we’d get a new receptionist who would frantically try to remember everyone’s names, I’d routinely introduce myself as George Lockwood. She’d look at me and say, “Wait, …you are…”, “George Lockwood,” I’d reply. It was a great gag until by chance, George and I were both present at the receptionist’s desk and the hoax was discovered. George didn’t mind the gag, he had a good sense of humor. He also had a big appetite. In those days he could put away chow like no one I’ve ever seen. I think everyone in the program packed on a few pounds from the food George regularly brought in, culminating in the oyster dressing at Thanksgiving Day potlucks. He was a trout fisherman, Rubicon Trail Jeeper, and a farmer that used to bring corn to the office by the wheelbarrow. Needless to say, the corn was grabbed up as though the office was populated by raccoons! Of course it wasn’t all office pranks, mountain recreation, corn farming, and oyster eating at work. One of George’s claims to fame was getting seven contested industrial waste discharge requirement (WDR) permits adopted at a single Regional Water Board hearing. Those of us who have ushered one contested WDR through the process know how difficult it can be; two is nearly impossible - to get seven contested WDRs through a single regional water board hearing is simply unbelievable. I don’t think anyone will ever approach that record, it is simply stupefying by its magnitude. Years later I followed George to an office downtown. Occasionally, we would discuss vegetable gardening. I was planning to plant some cantaloupe melons late in the season. “It is too late,” he told me. I proved him wrong about that, as the melon grew I’d tell my wife not to cut “George’s cantaloupe.” Eventually, it ripened and I brought it in for us to share. He had to eat metaphorical crow that day, but he didn’t mind, I packed the center with vanilla ice cream. He got sick and lost his physical strength, but he never lost his intellect or his sense of humor. I’m going to miss him.

Very sad to hear that George has passed. I worked with him in Ventura in the early 80s. I worked for Unocal and he worked for Schlumberger in sales. He was a great guy to work with and a natural born salesman. He had that sly smile that told you that no matter how serious the matter at hand, you could still have a good laugh about it at some point. Went to lunch with him many times and always enjoyed his company. He had a talent for setting people at ease. He was a good man and a professional. God bless his family and loved ones.

I know George from his ‘previous life’. He was a sales engineer for Schlumberger & Gearhart Wireline Services. As a past employee of Unocal, George was our contact for several offshore logging contracts. Needless to say, he ‘treated’ us to many lunches. We actually had a standing reservation at a fish restaurant in Ventura on Fridays. He was always generous and had a great sense of humor. We all better to have known him. I am so sorry for your loss

George was a funny, kind, and gentle man. We met through work in the early 2000s and he made those boring work meetings fun and worthwhile. He talked about his plan to take a cross-country motorcycle trip when he retired and later, talked about his different plans and hopes for his children. George's love for his kitty cats and his story about finding his little black cat were sweet and endearing.
