Obituary of JOHN COREY GREEVER
John Corey Greever
July 17, 1981 – August 3, 2019
An amazing young man – how does one write an obituary for their son?
John started his busy active life in the Nevada City/Grass valley area. At 4 years old, he
and his mom went to Massachusetts to be with his grandmother, Maida Gary. In 1987,
John and his mom returned to California eventually residing in Georgetown. He attended
Georgetown Elementary and Golden Sierra H.S. where he graduated in 1999. After 2
years of college, John went to Mannheim, Germany, studying Chemical Processing. He
then returned to attend Humbolt State graduating with a degree in Forestry with an
emphasis in Fire.
In 1992, John was blessed with the birth of his two sisters, Maida and Robin, whom he
loved dearly. He so enjoyed teaching them anything and everything.
In his early teens, John began his love of mountain biking. Off through the forest he
would go, building up his legs and stamina. This led to downhill mountain bike racing.
He won quite a few races, though it scared his mother. College then became the goal
combined with more adventures.
Over the years John studied every form of mathematics, physics, the atmosphere, climate
science, snow science, fluid dynamics, philosophy, and everything he could absorb.
Along the way, John became a river guide. He would be on the rivers in the summer. He
also became an instructor training new guides. His stories both frightened and entertained
his mother.
John spent winters as a ski patroller starting at Heavenly Valley, a year at Big Sky in
Montana, then returning to work at Kirkwood Ski Resort to patrol with a special interest
in avalanche work.
John began seriously running some years ago starting with a 10k then training himself to
withstand 50 mile runs. His running partner was Dasher, his most wonderful dog. They
were inseparable, running and hiking the trails between Georgetown and the top of the
Sierras. He also helped his sisters in their love of running.
John was a first responder, an adventurer, a runner, cyclist, a seeker of knowledge, a
wordsmith, and a teacher to all of us.
John Greever was sensitive, quick witted, smart as a whip and so very talented in any
pursuit.
Sadly left behind is the family who loves him – Wendy, Tremaine, Robin and Maida,
cousins, aunts and uncles, his brothers-in-law Clark and Anthony, his little nephew, Jack,
who will miss learning so much from his Uncle, so many good friends, two of whom he
knew from a very young age, and his many co-workers.
I will miss our great conversations, all your charts and graphs, and your beautiful smile. I
wish you had chosen to stay here. The universe has you now. I will miss you forever.
